Though, it might be worth watching for the recontextualization of the death of the girl in the shed. This isn't the kinda thing you cash in on. I'm so puzzled at who decided this was a worthwhile idea and why someone would sign on to make this.Īnd before you say "Hollywood greed" - this was released by IFC Midnight and is a remake of an independent film. I would really love to hear/read an interview with some of the people involved with making this. But why do that if you're going to keep every other plot point and set-piece practically the same? There are scenes and jokes that only make sense if you saw the original. One of the strangest aspects is that it's obviously made with people who saw the original in mind. It's a shot-for-shot remake of the original with some very minor differences, except it's not nearly as gory and almost all the weirdo/offensive humor is cut out (the pancakes scene is there but it's nowhere near as surreal). Never before have I been so baffled at the existence of a movie. Some bad movies are only fun because it's fun to describe how bad they are to people. I don't even know why I'm still talking about this. If the deaths are bland, the story is backwash, and the humor relies on over-the-topness and weird hillbillies doing weird hillbilly things, could you at least introduce some characters who aren't just absolutely completely 200% retarded the entire movie? I know that's a common "teen horror" trait these days, but I've been tired of it since before these days. Speaking of dumbasses, the IQs of these characters just plummeted to new depths of dumbassity. Good job, dumbass character, you get a wrinkled gold star sticker for originality.) I couldn't even tell a friend, "Eh, it's a good time if you have some beer." It felt like there was no one character to root for at all, I was just waiting for them all to die, and they were all kind of disappointing deaths anyway! (Except the shovel, if you count that. I want to say this could have been better, but honestly, could it have been better? My biggest complaint is that it's not even the fun kind of bad movie, IMO. However, I could fathom watching the remake and original occasionally than the sequels any day.įriday night before Valentine's weekend and I'm sitting here alone, watching the pathetic remake of a movie I didn't even enjoy in the first place. It's a major hit-and-miss in many areas and while I appreciate the enthusiasm, it's a shame it took two mediocre sequels within a span of 14-years for this film to be developed.Īnother problem is that since it hardly received a wide release and instead remained limited, it probably won't receive enough money in return and the chances for this franchise to go on with another installment to redeem itself could now become very low. Setting all of that aside there could've been some major adjustments that would've made this a superior than all of the installments in the franchise combined. Some newer casting choices were superior than originally. The eerie soundtrack helped the drama and horror elements. While not as gory as the sequels, it's impressive than originally. Some newer deaths were more creative than the originals. The drama helped when the humor lacked.Despite reusing the same script, some twists were clever.Overall, poor remake, Eli Roth what the hell are you thinking backing this?Īfter viewing it, I have extremely mixed feelings about it. But not everything of course, the Winston at the underage party scene was way better in the original.Īnd worst of all, what the hell was with that mid credit scene? Made absolutely no sense! Are they trying to imply something supernatural is going on? WTF? I thought a few of the character's death were more brutal (particularly Karen's) and the "safety's on" part actually got a giggle out of me. The highlight for me though was the last twenty minutes where they attempted a few new things. There was no suspense as I knew who was gonna die thus I got bored easily and checked my phone a lot. Why do this style of remaking as it evidently never works (Psycho and Carrie remakes). Plus, as was expected, almost everything was the same. Chemistry sucked too, just felt like a bunch of actors getting together for an easy buck. Bert and Deputy Winston were my favorite characters in the original movie, and here they are just bland as hell. Here are my thoughts.įirst, the humor was sorely missed.
