However, the Gazette was not printed and sold to the general public, rather it was sent to subscribers by mail. The Gazette was printed on both sides of a single sheet of paper. ![]() It was moved to London in 1666 and renamed the London Gazette. The Oxford Gazette was founded in Oxford, England in 1665 as a government newsbook and is recognized as the first English newspaper. Evolution of Mass Media The Adoption of Newspapers This led to an increase in public literacy. However, since mass-producing books made them less expensive, the middle classes were also able to access and enjoy them. And by the 1930s, many printing presses could produce 3,000 pages every 60 minutes.īefore the printing press, only the upper classes were really able to access books. The printing press increased the speed of communication and, consequently, the spread of knowledge as it took significantly less time to produce 50 printed books than it took to produce 50 handwritten books. Gutenberg’s printing press, however, enabled print media to be mass-produced. Until Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in the 15 th century, individuals wrote every book by hand, and, as such, each copy was unique. The next breakthrough in the history of communication is mass printing, a process that made it easier for people to get their news and other information and also increased literacy. While the transition from oral to written communication likely overlapped, historians have suggested that the oldest surviving written work in the Greek language that stemmed from oral tradition is “The Iliad” by Homer. Eventually, these stories and songs were written down and published. This made it possible for different cultures to transmit history, literature, law, and other knowledge orally across generations. This could happen through speech, including folktales, poetry, or prose, or through song, including chants or ballads. Storytelling then shifted to oral tradition, a form of communication where knowledge, art, ideas, and cultural information were transmitted from one generation to another by word of mouth. Experts believe that the ancient Egyptians created hieroglyphs as a way to accurately and reliably document and communicate information connected with religion and government. These people used Egyptian hieroglyphic script as a writing system to represent their language. Although the purpose of these cave paintings is unclear, one theory is that humans used these depictions to send messages to others as to what animals were safe to eat without using words.Īnd ancient Egyptians used hieroglyphs, a mix of picture and sound symbols, to communicate stories. The paintings typically depicted animals. Humans first created cave paintings around 62,000 B.C.E. In fact, cave paintings are the most well-known primitive forms of media. Media has existed in various forms for thousands of years. ![]() The Evolution of Media Through History Early Forms of Media In other words, McLuhan’s premise is that the form of the message, i.e., visual, print, musical, etc., influences how society perceives that message. In his book, “Understanding Media: Extensions of Man” published in 1964, Marshall McLuhan, who was a media theorist at the University of Toronto, coined the phrase “the medium is the message.” The concept behind the phrase is that the way society sends and receives information is more important than the actual information. The media also acts as a watchdog, investigating and reporting on government misconduct. The media is also extremely important in terms of education, as it helps children and teenagers develop critical thinking by teaching them to consider more than one point of view. Media is the best platform for people to get information about what’s happening worldwide and down the street.īy analyzing the information they receive, people can develop their own opinions about various concepts and topics, while (in the best of all worlds) respecting the opinions of people who don’t agree with them. Media plays a key role in people’s everyday lives as it helps educate them and enables them to keep track of the day-to-day news, both local and global. The Importance of Understanding Media in Today’s World Mass media refers to the news and information that reaches a large number of people, while local media, e.g., newspapers, and regional television/radio stations, serves the needs of the communities or urban areas in which they are located. ![]()

While fees, stars, and manager tenure produced a nice stair-step down, the turnover results were lumpier. Overall, turnover proved to have a smidgen of predictive power, but it was not as strong or consistent as the best predictors. Were we to run the data including expenses, we might find noisy results in which low turnover simply captured low costs in the form of index funds. ![]() The lowest-cost funds are mostly index funds, and those funds generally have low turnover. I wanted to separate turnover from expenses. Also, asking whether a fund survived is a way of accounting for the fact that many weak-performing funds are killed off each year in a way that can skew studies of fund data.įor turnover, I added another wrinkle. The idea is to use real data that existed in the past and see how one might have done using that past data rather than using today's data and projecting backward. If another group had a 20% rate, you know the former was better than the latter. So, a 40% success rate over a five-year period tells you that 40% of the funds in a certain group survived and outperformed. We calculated returns and success rate to find out what the chances are that a fund would survive and outperform its peers over the ensuing period. Using rolling five-year periods beginning in 2000, we ran a test that was similar to past tests of predictive value. A maturing bond constitutes a sale, so a short-term bond fund where most of the holdings are maturing in a year will run near 100% turnover simply by buying an equal amount of bonds to replace the ones that mature. In that case, the turnover rate would be significantly understated.īond funds present an additional challenge. If a fund has had large inflows or outflows in a year, the managers may have made far more purchases than sales or vice versa. However, by choosing the lesser of the two rather than summing them and dividing by 2, the SEC is allowing some quirky results to sneak in. The SEC uses purchases or sales rather than both because that would be double-counting. It doesn't actually mean he's held nothing for more than one year-he may have held half the portfolio unchanged throughout the year and turned over the other half twice. As you'd expect, a 100% turnover ratio means the manager has turned over an amount of shares equal to the total value of the portfolio. The algorithm is a sum of the dollar value of the lesser of purchases and sales during the fiscal year divided by average net assets over that period. The SEC mandates how fund companies calculate turnover, and that method could stand to be updated. I'll walk you through what turnover means, how I tested it, what the tests show, and finally, what turnover tells you about a fund's strategy. Because many investors use it in their selection process, I thought I'd put turnover through the paces to see where it shakes out versus the other data points. Last year I examined the predictive power of a number of data points, but I didn't test turnover. ![]() ![]() ![]() Some years the time changes, and some years it doesn’t. That growth rate is equivalent to a compound annual return of 60% 40% would be low for a deal as risky as Icos. But venture capitalists, who spread their investments over many companies in hopes that the winners will more than make up for the losers, expect their money to grow by, say, a factor of ten within five years, to compensate for the risk they are taking. In an interview with FORTUNE, the chairman of Icos, George Rathmann, said that if all went well investors might see average annual returns surpassing 40%. The company sold the shares through a confidential private-placement memorandum, similar to a prospectus. Paine Webber turned to the public to raise money for Icos in a private placement of nontradable shares. Normally venture capitalists put up the money for such fledglings, but these engines of enterprise are less interested in biotech startups than they once were. But soon you are out of business.'' The marketing of Icos suggests that these conflicts may increase in future financings of biotech companies. Says Robert Pangia, co-head of Paine Webber's investment banking arm: ''We're in business for the long haul. But if those terms are so attractive to the client that they burn the investors, the brokerage will lose credibility. The firm must compete for the business of the issuing company and offer attractive terms to win the account. Any brokerage house that issues stock for corporate clients and sells it to investors faces a potential conflict of interest. The transaction also brought to a head a longstanding turf battle inside Paine Webber: It culminated with the ouster of a managing director who argued that the Icos deal was too lucrative for the firm and the founders - at the expense of the investors. ![]() No one who isn't steeped in biotech could comprehend the complexities of the business.
